Vacances

Will you still be here tomorrow?

I really wanted to change subject, to talk about something else, to take a little bit more of time and have a more developed entry this time. But as always, I postponed writing until the last minute. And stuff happened.

So, given that I have little time and nothing new to say I will try to keep it brief.  I like very much the Cat Steven's song "Father and Son". And, in a way, I can see both sides of the coin in that song. But well, finding meaning in songs it is maybe an illusion. Anyway, it has this phrase:

"But take your time, think a lot
Think of everything you've got
For you will still be here tomorrow
But your dreams may not"

I have always been on the reflective and wary side, so this was not news to me. But, from time to time, you are remembered that maybe, just maybe, you will not be here tomorrow, even if your dreams have not disappeared before. Even if I have no big dreams to reach for, I have so much to lose. I just hate the idea of not, I do not know, be able to not watch the next hot series or skip the next big game. It probably will not happen, but it could. Any time.

And the world will keep on spinning, careless, indifferent, as it always has. Some people will be very sad, some may have scars for life, but they will learn to go on, somehow. Because we are but tears in the rain.

The best version of Thyself

In the las post I was talking about the death of music as I knew it. As always that statement was hyperbolic, although it has some truth it. Nor music, nor rock has died, but maybe the traditional rock band formation has. For some 6 decades or so it was so prevalent, so ubiquitous that it seem the real way to make music, at least rock music. But time has passed and it is no longer en vogue. Now music is mainly made in computers, by a couple of artists and big teams of specialists. I think it is not coincidental that there are so many collaborations between singers, because most of the time music is just engineered, fabricated. So it makes sense to make a lot of crossovers and I guess that many times the main force behind the songs of those artists are the same teams of engineers and ghost writers. Anyway, it seems the heyday of the rock band with drummer, bass and guitar are gone. However I guess the older people in the sixties were baffled when they saw the one man backed by a orchestra being replace by the Beatles modeled rock band as the primary source of mainstream music.

But what does that has to do with anything? Well, simply put, it makes me feel uneasy. I have always been aware that time passes and we grow older. But maybe I was not really aware of how the world changes. Some things evolve, others just disappear. And that includes us. And that happen at any time. We really take many, many things for granted. The first is our own existence in the next few years, but also others' and also things that we forget how important they are, such as freedom, security, health, family. Anything can go away at any time. Even things that we somehow thought that would always be there, even after we died.

I know that is some quite large leap of logic, from "the music changes" to "everything we know, need and love can disappear before our eyes (including us)" but, well, that is just me, with my obsession to think on the worst case scenario but then ignoring that altogether and never doing anything. So, for a change, what are you going to do about it?

Well, probably nothing, besides writing about it to free my mind from it and to fill some self-imposed quota. But lately I have been listening to some Philosophy podcast (Philosophize this!) and it seems that many philosophers had theories about what should humans do to become the best version of themselves. I just heard about three philosophers and all three had something to say in that respect. Maybe its just the podcaster, but it made me think that trying to become the best version of yourself is important, very important, something to really think about and struggle to pursue.

I know myself, the least persevering person I know, but maybe, just maybe, I can muster the will to try to become a better version of myself during the limited time I have. And what is that better version? I guess it depends on who you ask. Probably I could read a little bit more about it, but many of the characteristics are surely common and evident. I will probably do nothing, but at least this post will be here, and maybe it will inspire someone, maybe even my future self, to do something for once.

Losing all momentum

¡Salud!

The strangest year of our lives

So. The ending is (to)nigh(t). The ending of the strangest year of our lifes, at least for many of us.

Who could have guessed? Even back in March when it was clear that the virus was getting out of control, not contained in China as we first thought. On the other hand, society was not destroyed by it. There were not shortages of food, although deliveries were delayed and it was very hard to buy on online supermarkets for a while. But those were minor inconveniences compared with the things others had to deal with.

Anyway, society survived and our low-key Apocalypse seems to be more or less under control. However, it is far from over. And two main questions remain. When this will be really over? and, more importantly, how much it will change the world?

No one has the answers, but it is fun to imagine. I guess life will start getting back to 'normal' in 6 to 9 months, maybe more. Social live will resume (for those who have stopped it, which are hardly the majority).

And how much will the world change?

It is difficult to say. In a day to day level, probably face masks will disappear almost completely, except for some reluctant hypochondriacs (I will be one of them). Maybe we will still wash our hands a lot. Or maybe not. Probably just the ones wearing masks from time to time.

I think most people will be back to the "old normal". I think most of the people are doing now many "old normal" things, just wearing a mask in order to avoid fines and that's it. Others will retain some new habits, crazy stuff for the rest, like wearing face masks in crowded closed spaces, washing their hands constantly and maybe avoiding physical interactions. I will probably be on that side. I will probably never shake hands with an stranger again. Also, many pantries will be full most of the time.

What more will change, aside for the little perks some of us have developed? Time for more wild guesses. At the next level some business will die and others will flourish. E-commerce will probably be stronger than ever, with many companies accelerating their digital transformations, progressing years of planning in mere months. Remote working will be more common, but not as ubiquitous as it should.

Before the pandemic companies that rented vehicles on the fly (Wible, Zity, Car2Go, etc,) where thriving and made much easier to live without a car in a city. Then the pandemic hit out of nowhere and I thought they would go out of business, but it seems they are managing to survive, so maybe we will see more of them. Specially if remote working spreads. I do not know if we will see more changes in transportation, besides a little less commuting.

What about politics? It is very hard to say. It does not seem that we will see much change. Populism seems to only getting worse, creating a bigger and bigger divide between confronting sides with no chance of agreement. We had experienced that around 80 years ago and that ended... poorly. At a worldwide level, populism seems on the rise too. What I am more curious about is what will happen to the "World Order". The EU has started to pursue something called "strategic independence", seing that the USA is a less reliable ally, specially now that the UK has parted ways with it. Also it will probably try to lessen our dependency of China exports for some critical material and other dependencies. It also was encouraging that the relief funds for the pandemic were somehow tied to the "democraticness" of the receiving countries. At the moment it might not seem like much, but it will hopefully mean change for some countries and less feeling of being cheated for the rest. It seems like a step in the good direction and a little spark of hope. Hope countered by the avalanche of nationalism that seems will tear the EU apart. But we can only hope.

Well, that was a lot. And also very little. I cannot wait for 5 or 10 years to pass and find how cringeworthy this post is. Also, why did I write it in English? There are so many sentences I think are poorly written.

Anyway, goodbye, strange, strange year.

Make the most out of it
